  • Detail — Fractured Doll

    . . . a childishly utopian view

Why the chimera when you do not seem to be a monster?

The chimera is not only a monster — a mythical creature with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a dragon. The chimera is also illusion, fantasy, a wild or unrealistic dream. A creation of the imagination. That's me. Always dreaming. I am a chimera with the blues.

Since the early nineteen eighties, I've worked to create advertising and marketing campaigns that tell the stories of others. While advertising is not a field that is traditionally pursued by people of color; storytelling is. I have often been told that art is for art's sake and paintings are supposed to be about light and not stories.

Oh well. Traditional or not, it is sometimes just plain difficult to be somewhat unique and to find support for oneself in this world. I've worked to support my own family first. My dreams had to wait. I'm a great mom, in keeping with the ways of that tradition, my family is fine but I am not. Here I will be the rest of what I am — an artist. A woman with pictures to make and stories to tell.

At Sienna Heights College in Adrian, Michigan, I majored in Ceramics and Painting but I graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Management — this to please those who felt life as an artist would be unrealistic for me. I had so much to learn about being myself. Anyway, the paintings stayed hidden inside me. It took twenty years of life and independent study to make paintings I am finally willing to share. If you want, you can keep an eye on me as I continue to grow as an artist.
